Let’s suppose you have basic sewing skills. There is a baby coming into your life, and you have been wondering how to make baby things. You may also be asking, What is the easiest thing to sew for a baby?


Watch Jenny demonstrate the Self Binding Baby Quilt (Receiving Blanket). As you can see, this is the easiest of our easy baby sewing projects for beginners. It needs a straight stitch, two pieces of flannel, and some thread. With basic sewing machine skills and minimal materials, you can make a cozy blanket! Whether you are sewing for baby boys or baby girls–all newborns need to be swaddled–and receiving blankets are the perfect thing for that.


More recently, Jenny demonstrated a Self-Binding Baby Blanket with Shannon Cuddle fabric. This is the same baby sewing projects for beginners pattern as the flannel receiving blanket but with easier construction techniques! Whether you use flannel or fleece, these blankets are fast and easy sewing ideas for baby gifts. Every parent needs more than one of these multi-purpose blankets.


If you have never made a quilt before but want to attempt one for a baby who is special to you, Laura Piland can help! In her sewing baby items tutorial, she guides you start-to-finish through construction of the Streamer Quilt-As-You-Go Crib Quilt. This easy-peasy quilt is one of our perfect baby sewing patterns for beginners.

Would you like to make a Fitted Crib Sheet to match the beautiful blanket or quilt you’ve made? A set of Nesting Bins is one of the baby sewing projects that can keep a nursery well organized. Misty Doan also has great ideas about things to sew for kids as well. The Grow With Me Growth Chart is one of Misty’s multi-purpose sewing patterns for kids. This chart is home decor, a record of a child’s growth milestones, and a keepsake. (It is also one of those wonderful things to sew for grandchildren!) A Reading Pillow is a sewing for kids project to encourage literacy. It is excellent for snuggling with a book at home, but it also works well as a travel pillow. Kids can tuck their book and flashlight into the pockets and load up for the ride.


Two other of Misty's sewing ideas for kids are the Back to School Lunch Bag and the Fabric Checkerboard. The Lunch Bag is an example of simple sewing projects for kids that could also be sewn by kids–with a little help. If you are looking for more advanced kids’ sewing projects, the Fabric Checkerboard is a great introduction to piecing, setting zippers, and basic machine quilting.
