Often our stuff has to go with us to the places we go. So having totes and bags and pouches to carry our stuff is a necessity of life. Wouldn’t it be great to make your own totes and pouches? If you have basic sewing skills, you can! And you can customize the bags you make to match the personalities of the people who will stuff them–choose the fabrics, add more pockets–no problem. Let’s start with pouches for organizing small stuff. In The Zipper Pouch Tutorial, Jenny shows you how to sew a simple bag with a zipper. Then, to amp up the fun, in the Candy Bag Zipper Pouch Tutorial, Jenny shows you how to sew a bag using a candy package. There is not a kid on the planet aged kindergarten through college who wouldn’t love having a pencil pouch made from a candy bag! These zipper pouches are excellent sewing projects for beginners and easy-to-make gifts.


The Fancy Zipper Bag and the Two Tone Zipper Pouch are two other small bag sewing projects. The tutorials for these pouches explain that you can adjust the size of the bag to meet your own needs. The Make a Red Heart Fancy Zipper Bag finishes at 6” x 7” x 4” which would make it a nice size for make-up, toiletries, or larger art supplies such as paint bottles. All of these bags feature the Missouri Star zipper which you don’t want to hide because it is decorative! Therefore, you set this zipper on the outside of the bag. It is a super easy zipper for beginning sewists.


The Back to School Lunch Bag is a good tote bag pattern for beginners. The example Misty created in the basic tote bag tutorial was lined with fusible fleece. However, you could use Insul-Bright if you wanted to insulate your lunch tote. Misty’s lunch bag video is a good “how to sew a tote bag for beginners” tutorial because it covers the basic skills of tote construction–making and attaching straps, boxing corners, and lining the bag.


Another tutorial that will help you learn how to make a tote bag is Misty’s Clear Vinyl Bag Tutorial. This bag is perfect for the times you are on your way to a sporting event or concert in a venue where clear bags are required. Because it has no lining or zippers, it is also a good choice for learning how to sew a purse for beginners. Misty demonstrates basic bag construction in this sewing tote bag tutorial–the only difference is that the sewist is working in vinyl rather than cloth.


Even novice sewists want to create finished projects that look polished. Missouri Star has a tote bag sewing pattern called the Easy Quilted Zipper Tote Pattern that Misty demonstrated in a Missouri Star Live tutorial on making tote bags. (Helpful Tip: Watch a tutorial on straight line quilting before you dive into this tote bag tutorial.) This tote bag pattern would be easy to customize with additional pockets if desired. With Misty showing you step-by-step how to build this tote bag pattern with zipper, you are sure to achieve stylish results.


If you need a crossbody purse that functions like a tote bag–and want a purse with color and personality–you would enjoy the Tumbler Bag. It is big enough for all the things you would put into a purse plus a book or tablet or baby essentials.
