Essex yarn-dyed coots homespun
I love the look and feel of this fabric, and since the description says it is appropriate for quilting, I bought several yards for a quilt I’m making. Unfortunately, after cutting into small pieces for my quilt’s background fabric, I’m noticing it ravels a lot. I did not prewash, so I am hoping the Natalie-designed Scattered Leaves quilt I’m making will not fall apart. I also noticed that it is a looser weave than most cotton used for quilting, so I’m suggesting that you include these facts in your description of the fabric. It’s a lot of work to make a quilt, and of course, we want it to last. If I’d known about the characteristics of this homespun, I think I would’ve chosen to do the background in a grey or black chambray. :-(

slight disappointment
I like the color; the texture was not as tight as I like.

Questions & Answers
Ask a Question
Q: Is this going to shrink a lot since I t has a more open weave than most cotton quilting fabric? Thank you. asked by Diane B.
A: Essex shrinks more than cotton sheeting. In particular when using Essex for garments, it is best pre-wash (cold water recommended) your fabrics. Wash dark colors separately. Due to the woven nature of the fabric, Essex tends to ravel. Robert Kaufman Fabrics recommends buying slightly more fabric than you need to account for shrinkage and raveling.
