What solids fabric colors inspire you? Becoming more color-aware is really about recognizing the ways that color inspires us every day and using that awareness in our personal quilting projects. Colors can have a strong effect on our emotions and can bring us comfort, joy, excitement, and peace.

Choosing Solid Fabrics

Ever wonder what the key is to picking the right solid fabric for your project? Sometimes it can be overwhelming to know which solid color quilt fabric to choose for a project, but we're here to help. First, making color choices with a plan in mind provides a foundation that will inform your other fabric choices and can encourage even greater creativity. Don’t be afraid to take a color wheel along with you when you go shopping for solids fabrics!

Try using some of these common color combinations to pick the perfect solid fabrics for even greater quilting success:

Primary Colors—These are the three pigments that are mixed to create every other color - red, yellow and blue. All other colors are formed from these three. They are the building blocks of color!

Secondary Colors—These are colors formed from mixing the primary colors in different combinations - orange, green and violet.

Tertiary Colors —These are colors formed by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. There are six total: Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, Red-Violet

From here, you can group colors in several ways to make choosing your solid fabric easier: 

Monochromatic Colors–Choosing one color and using variations of it exclusively. For example, using only purple.

Complementary Colors–Choosing two colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. For example, using purple and yellow together.

Triadic Colors –Choosing three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel, forming a triangle. For example, using purple, red-orange, and green together.

Analogous Colors–Choosing a range of colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, using red, orange, and yellow together.

Spectrum–Using all of the colors on the wheel. A rainbow of possibilities!

Color Value

Now it’s time to talk about color value. Put simply, value is how light or dark a color is. If you tend to choose colors of solid fabrics that are medium value (i.e. not too light and not too dark), they are not going to create much contrast within your quilting project. Here are two simple tips to easily identify how much color contrast you have between your chosen fabrics. First, assemble all of your solid fabrics, and then take a step back and squint. Which colors stand out?

Another handy trick is to use the monochrome function on your phone's camera. Simply snap a quick shot of your chosen solid fabrics arranged together, then edit the photo and select the black & white/monochrome mode (the name may vary by device and operating system). If you are having trouble identifying each distinct fabric in your photo, that means that you need to pick solid fabrics that are either lighter and darker to create the desired amount of contrast.

Choosing solid color quilt fabrics that are in different shades, tones, and tints changes value. Pure colors are always going to stand out the most when compared to colors mixed with more gray, or tones. And yellow, when it’s a pure color, is always going to stand out the most in any design, so keep that in mind. Warm colors in general are going to be more dominant than cool colors.

Shades—adding black to a color makes it darker.

Tones—adding gray to a color makes it more neutral.

Tints—adding white to a color makes it lighter.
