The classic paisley originated in Persia thousands of years ago. It was called a “boteh,” and served as an ancient symbol of life and eternity.
The boteh design arrived in Europe by way of the silk route, woven into treasured Kashmir shawls that could cost as much as a small house! Once it got to Scotland, the design was copied on shawls mass produced in a town called (no, I didn’t make this up) Paisley! Obviously that’s where it picked up its most popular modern name, but outside of Scotland, the French called it “tadpole,” the Viennese said “little onion,” and the Welsh went with “Welch pears.” But best of all was the name given to the irresistible pattern by American quilters, who called it the “Persian pickle!” They say a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, so I suppose today’s paisley precut will add oomph and pizazz to your next project no matter what you call it!
