Aurifil is a family-owned company based in Milan, Italy that specializes in the manufacture of 100% cotton thread. Aurifil thread is used by quilters, sewists, embroiderers, and textile artists who appreciate its versatility, strength, and the fact that it produces virtually no lint.
Missouri Star is proud to offer both Aurifil 40 wt thread and Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread for our Thread of the Month Clubs. You may be wondering, what is the difference between 40 wt and 50 wt thread? A smaller weight indicates a heavier thread. A thread is labeled 40 wt when 40 kilometers of that thread weighs 1 kilogram. A 50 wt thread is lighter; it takes 50 kilometers of thread to reach a weight of 1 kilogram.
So now you are wondering, which is the best Aurifil quilting thread–40 wt or 50 wt? The Aurifil company has created a helpful–and beautiful–reference guide for their threads. It shows the uses for each thread, the recommended needles, and the suggested thread weight for the bobbin. You may download the reference guide here on the Aurifil thread website. Briefly, both 40 wt and 50 wt are suitable for hand piecing, machine applique, and machine embroidery. Aurifil recommends 40 wt for custom longarm quilting but 50 wt for English paper piecing, basting, and both machine and longarm quilting.
Serious sewists like to keep a selection of thread on hand. It is no fun having a burst of creative inspiration–you have just the right fabric in your stash–but you don’t have thread to match. Ugghhh! The Aurifil Thread of the Month Club can help you build a stash of thread so that you will be ready for any lightning strikes of creativity.
An Aurifil Color Builder subscription has a theme for the year. If you choose the Aurifil Rainforest Color Builder, each month you will receive three large spools of thread based on the color palette of a different rainforest plant. You might like to take a tour of Italy and receive Aurifil Color Builder thread matched to the Dolomites, Capri, and other Italian destinations. Or you could choose to learn about twelve endangered species–such as the Pink Land Iguana–and receive Aurifil Color Builders threads matched to these creatures.
No matter which Aurifil Color Builder subscription you choose, you are sure to have fun stitching with your beautiful new thread colors each month–and maybe learning something new along the way. By the end of the year, you will have a fabulous rainbow of thread colors in your sewing room–no more running out for supplies when inspiration strikes! You will also receive a discount coupon for machine quilting services from Missouri Star.
