At Missouri Star we are blessed by the influence of many creative quilters–one of whom is Laura Piland of Slice of Pi Quilts. Laura used to teach math. She gave up that gig for the opportunity to raise three sons, whom she teaches from home. Laura had her first sewing experience when she was 7 or 8–making an outfit for a 4-H project–but it was not a particularly positive experience. She wasn’t inspired to sew again until 2010 when a friend had a baby. Laura decided that she wanted to make her friend a baby quilt as a gift. Utilizing calls to her mom, consultations with Google, and YouTube videos, Laura finished the project and caught the quilting bug.
Laura now describes herself as a quilter and pattern designer. When her business needed a name, she chose Slice of Pi Quilts - a nod to both her last name and her love of math. Laura is the host of a series of tutorial videos on the Missouri Star Creating for Kids webpage. If you are looking for creative and easy things you can sew for a baby, check out this page.
We are happy to offer Laura’s Slice of Pi quilt patterns for sale at Missouri Star.
If you are a tactile person, you will enjoy Laura’s Cotton Candy quilt pattern. This quilt calls for cuddle fleece for the cotton candy puffs that fill the quilt surface. The instructions for this pattern allow for sizing from a mini quilt through a queen size. Laura likes to design quilts for fat quarters. Her Slice of Pi Exploding Heart pattern features a huge multi-colored heart that explodes love beyond its boundaries. It requires 15 fat quarters. You may choose to use 15 different fat quarters for a scrap quilt effect or choose five fat quarters of three different colors for a more coordinated effect. This Slice of Pi exploding quilt pattern has a finished size of 72” x 72”.
Laura’s Split Arrows quilt pattern is another of her fat quarter quilt patterns. The baby quilt version of this pattern requires 8 fat quarters. A twin bed quilt will need 24 fat quarters. This quilt is a combination of herringbone and chevron–making an “arrowhead” pattern that would be beautiful in any variety of fabrics.
