Here at Missouri Star, we have a variety of options to help you fuse fabrics together to give shape to your projects. One of many options is fusible webbing, a heat-reacting fiber.
What is Quilting Fusible Web?
Fusible web is a thin adhesive material that is used in quilting and appliqué projects to temporarily bond fabric pieces together. It typically comes in sheets or rolls and has a paper backing that can be peeled off. Fusible web allows you to easily adhere fabric shapes to your project before stitching them in place, eliminating the need for pins or basting stitches.
Quilting fusible web is used not only to fuse fabrics together, but also to tack down binding, patch small holes, and mend hems. This versatile sticky bonding comes in numerous brands with different fusing methods, and can help applique projects easily come together!
How Do I Use Fusible Web?
Generally speaking, most fusible web works by simply applying the sticky bonding to your fabric and adhering it using heat. You can trace or draw your desired shape onto the paper side of the fusible web before or directly after this step, then iron the fusible web onto the wrong side of your fabric, following the manufacturer's instructions. Once it's fused in place and cooled down, you can cut out your shape and peel off the paper backing, revealing the adhesive side. Finally, position the fabric shape onto your project and iron it again to permanently bond it in place.
This process may vary depending on the type of fusible web you’re using, however. Some have paper on both sides, while others only have paper on one side, and some don’t have paper on them at all! You will also sometimes find quilting fusible web in rolls in a variety of widths, while others are sold in precut sizes.
There are numerous videos on YouTube showing how to properly apply different types of fusible webs. Our Missouri Star channel even has tutorials with simple steps on fusible web applique and how to machine applique with fusible web!
When Should I Use Quilting Fusible Web?
Fusible web is particularly useful for appliqué projects where you want to add intricate fabric shapes onto a background fabric without the hassle of sewing them in place manually. It helps to create clean, professional-looking appliqué designs with crisp edges. Additionally, it can be used in quilting to easily attach patches or motifs to quilt blocks before stitching them down.
What is the Difference Between Fusible Web and Interfacing?
No sew fusible web is a fiber with adhesive on both sides whereas interfacing is actually a fabric. Fusible interfacing (such as Heat N Bond fusible interfacing) can be affixed with heat and pressure, but non-fusible interfacing doesn’t have adhesive and therefore must be sewn, woven, or knitted in.
