Precut Fused Applique Shapes

Precut appliqué shapes, laser cut applique kits, fusible applique... these terms may sound a bit intimidating, but fear not! You’ll come to find that applique projects and applique quilts are heaps of fun. So, what is a laser cut applique kit? It’s simply pre cut applique shapes (or pre cut fabric shapes) that are already in the shape you need and have pre-applied fusible webbing on the back of each one. Laser cut fabric shapes are great because they are much more precise than cutting it out by hand. Not to mention, laser cut fusible appliques save you so much cutting time!

So how do you apply fabric applique? Well, it’s super easy if you’re using pre cut appliqué shapes, and remember—you can always cut them out yourself if you find a pattern you like. But when using laser cut pre fused applique pieces, all you need to do is iron the fusible side to the “right” side of your chosen fabric, then after that you pick your stitching! If you’re wondering what stitch do you use for applique? Most quilters recommend the zig zag stitch or a blanket stitch.

Do you quilt before or after applique? Another good question! There is no right or wrong applique technique because it depends on the project itself. If your project is small and simple, quilting it before adding your precut applique shapes might be easier compared to a larger project. With bigger applique projects and applique quilts, many quilters recommend a quilt-as-you-go method so that you can tackle one section at a time.
