Are gnomes lurking about your garden? If so, you are in good company! The word gnome most likely came from a Latin word that means “earth-dweller.” Gnomes are strong, fast, and can move through the earth rather than having to walk upon it. They are intelligent, industrious, kind, wise, and sometimes mischievous. Gnomes guard underground treasure–such as gold–and also protect against unnecessary damage to the earth and wildlife.
A Little Gnome History
Gnomes first appeared in the oral tradition of Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian folklore in the late Middle Ages. Stories of gnomes spread to the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany, then eventually to England and France. Gradually gnomes took physical form in artwork and then as statuary that people placed in their gardens.
Gnomes hopped the Atlantic to the United States with European immigrants. Recently gnomes have been invited indoors because people are enchanted by these charming, supernatural creatures. If you are looking for gnome fabric and gnome quilt patterns for your own gnome invasion, Missouri Star can help!
What to Make with Gnome Fabric
We carry gnome quilt fabric by major manufacturers such as Riley Blake and Wilmington Prints as well as Henry Glass gnome fabric and Timeless Treasures gnome fabric. You might enjoy using a gnome fabric panel as the foundation for your project and then choose coordinating gnome cotton fabric by the yard or precut gnome print fabric to complete your piece. For example, Wilmington Prints offers a gnome fabric quilt panel that can be used for constructing a quilt or garden tote–both with coordinating gnome fabric cotton. If you prefer, both of these projects are available as kits. The gnome quilt kit is one of many quilt kits offered by Missouri Star.
If you are wondering how make a gnome quilt, we can help! The best place to start is to find the perfect gnome quilt pattern! We absolutely love Jenny's "You Gnome I Love You Quilt" - watch the free tutorial above to see how easy it is to create the sweetest gnome quilt using 10" fabric squares (layer cakes)!
Of course, any pattern can become a Christmas gnome quilt pattern simply by your choice of fabric. The same is true of quilts for which you would like to give an aesthetic based upon your ethnic heritage. If you are having trouble finding Scandinavian gnome fabric or German gnome fabric by yard, look for prints that evoke the traditions of your home country to construct the clothing and hat of the gnomes in your project.
You might decide to gnome around with some appliqué! We offer wonderful gnome applique kits from The Whole Country Caboodle. If you have never appliquéd before, you might start small with a rug mug kit. Choose your favorite gnome fabric kit from our selection and make a 7’x10’ mat for yourself or for a gift. All the required materials are included–except for needles and thread. After you decide that you enjoy appliqué, you could choose a gnome applique pattern for a table runner, placemats, a pillow, calendar, or a gnome applique quilt pattern.
