What is fabric chalk?
Well, put simply, it’s a temporary marking tool used by tailors, quilters, seamstresses, and sewists to accurately mark where to make corrections or add decorative pieces on fabric.
Can you use regular chalk on fabric?
Technically, yes, but you may not get the same accurate results that you would when using fabric chalk pens or fabric chalk pencils. Fabric chalk for sewing offers sharper edges for precise temporary markings that can easily be removed, whereas regular school chalk may leave behind a smear or stain depending on the fabric.
What can I use instead of a fabric marker?
If you do not have access to chalk for sewing, some people use slivers of soap. Others use school chalk. You can also check out other Missouri Star notions for marking or tracing on fabrics.
Now that we've demystified the ins and outs of fabric marking chalk, we hope you feel inspired to to use these skills in your next quilt project!
