English Paper Piecing (EPP) is a technique used to stabilize fabric over a paper template, often employed for designs that feature set-in corners, such as the hexagon shape.

What is English Paper Piecing?
English Paper Piecing involves basting fabric onto paper piecing templates by hand stitching or using fabric glue. Then, the pieces are stitched together by hand to create a quilt block. Once all of the seams are complete, the paper template is gently removed, revealing the finished design.
The paper templates provide a stable foundation for creating accurate shapes, especially complex ones like hexagons, diamonds, and curves. Once the pieces are joined, the papers are removed, leaving behind a beautiful patchwork of fabric.
What is the Difference Between FPP and EPP?
While Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) and English Paper Piecing (EPP) both use paper as a guide, it’s important to note that they are distinct techniques.
For example, EPP is done entirely by hand and the paper is a template around which the fabric is shaped. Conversely, FPP is typically done by machine and the paper is a foundation onto which fabric is stitched. Both methods offer high accuracy, but EPP is particularly suited for complex shapes and intricate designs.
English Paper Piecing Supplies
To get started, you’ll need a few essential English paper piecing supplies:
➤Fabric: You can use fabric scraps, precuts, or any fabric of your choice. However, we recommend using the same type of fabric throughout your project to maintain consistency. Quilting cotton is the best option.

➤Sewing Needle and Thread: A milliner's needle, sometimes referred to as a straw needle, is an excellent choice for English paper piecing. Experiment with different sizes to find what works best for you. Generally, a thin, sharp needle is preferred as it minimizes visible holes. For cotton fabric, start with a size 9 or 10. Use a smaller size (1-4) for heavyweight fabric and a larger size (10-12) for tight-weave fabrics, like Batik. For thread, both cotton and polyester are good options; there is some debate about which is better, so try both to see which you prefer. A neutral color thread or one that blends well with your fabrics is a great choice.
➤English paper piecing templates: Pre-cut paper templates (sometimes also called EPP templates) are available in various shapes and sizes. They are generally more affordable than English paper piecing plastic templates, although both are available on today’s market.
➤Scissors or Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat: These are necessary for cutting your fabric shape using your chosen English paper piecing templates.
English Paper Piecing Patterns
Once you have gathered your EPP supplies, it’s time to explore the many types of projects can you create using this exciting technique!
English paper piecing hexagons is probably the first thing that comes to mind, but there are many common motifs in EPP patterns, such as hexagons, diamonds, triangles, and squares, which are often combined to create intricate tessellations or mosaic-like designs. While English paper piecing is known for its precision with straight lines, it can also be used to create gentle curves, such as the popular clamshell EPP quilt patterns.
From English paper pieced quilts to Modern English paper piecing patterns, there are a variety of projects you can make, including pillow covers, tote bags, decorative table runners, and even intricate quilt blocks, and quilt tops.
One quick & easy idea for trying EPP quilting for beginners is to applique a few small template pieces onto a base or interfacing, then adding it onto a quilt or bag project. This is a great way to dip your toe into EPP quilting while also customizing your quilting or sewing project!
