Some people wonder what is a backing fabric? Quilt backing is the bottom layer of the quilt sandwich. The top of the quilt is usually formed from pieces of fabric sewn together to create interesting designs. The middle is the batting–the insulating layer that provides warmth. Circle Play is one example of a Color Principle by Henry Glass fabric. Circle Play has overlapping rings of concentric circles. The colors around the rings fade in and out. Circle Play Black Tonal is rendered in shades of black, gray, and white. Circle Play Blue Tonal has shades of black, dark blue, purple, and light blue. Circle Play White Pastel pops with green, yellow, pink, blue, and purple.

Starburst is a Color Principle wide backing fabric that looks like explosions of fireworks. Tie Dye Starburst Red Blue would be an excellent choice for a patriotic quilt. Tie Dye Starburst Blue Purple has bright pops of purple, pink, and green.
