Christina Cameli lives in Portland, Oregon where she works as a Nurse-Midwife, specializing in menopause care. She is also a mom, paddleboarder, quilter, quilt pattern and fabric designer, teacher, and author. Christina uses texture, pattern, and color to create stunning, modern quilts. Before you pass GO and collect $200, take a few moments to view the gallery on Christina’s website.
As you scroll through the gallery, notice Christina’s notes in the captions. Some quilts were designed with the help of wedge and angle rulers. On many quilts, she uses free motion quilting to achieve intricate textures that almost look like trapunto. Other quilts in the gallery feature Christina Cameli fabric–specifically Christina Cameli Saguaro and Moongate by Christina Cameli both from Maywood Studios. You will also see crumb blocks and examples of improvisational piecing in Christina’s gallery.
After looking at her gallery, are you feeling inspired or daunted? We probably wouldn’t recommend that “I’ve never sewn before” quilters launch into a Christina Cameli style quilt. However, novice quilters can make crumb blocks and use improvisational Christina Cameli quilting techniques. And on the FMQ (free-motion quilting) page of her website, Christina says, “I quilted on a domestic machine for 15 years! You can too.”
If you feel inspired by Christina’s gallery and are ready to attempt her more challenging techniques, Missouri Star has some resources to help!
Let’s suppose you were captivated by the quilts on the gallery that had wedge and angle blocks. We have Christina Cameli quilt patterns for table toppers that will help you test drive these blocks. Once you’ve made these small projects using scraps from your stash, you can decide if you like the technique enough to make a larger quilt with these blocks.
Maybe your favorite parts of the gallery tour were the examples of Christina Cameli free motion quilting. You want to know, “How does she do that?” We have Christina Cameli books that can help answer that question. And don’t forget that Christina’s website is a valuable source of information.
If you like modern quilts, we think you should keep your eye out for Christina Cameli fabrics by Maywood Studios and check out Christina Cameli quilting books. Here at Missouri Star, we will certainly be watching what she creates next.
