Angela Walters caught the quilting bug from her husband’s grandfather. He taught her how to make her first Nine Patch quilt–which is still on her bed today. Since then, Angela has become a devoted quilter. She opened a quilt shop in downtown Liberty, MO; has taught classes; published several quilt books; designed fabric; and invented some very clever quilting rulers. Missouri Star is pleased to offer Angela Walters quilting rulers and books to our customers.
If you have been considering an attempt at quilting on your home machine, Angela Walters has a plethora of tips for you! You might want to start with one or more of Angela Walters quilting’ books for some practical how-to as well as inspiration. Angela Walters Quilt Making for Beginners is an essential pocket reference guide for novice (and not-so-novice) quilters. You may also like Free Motion Meandering: A Beginner’s Guide to Machine Quilting.
Creative Grids quilting tools by Angela Walters help free motion quilters create patterns while they stitch. This is what she says about the technique on her website, “Machine quilting with rulers is a technique that helps quilters of all skill levels, whether you have never machine quilted before or you’ve been quilting for years! They not only help you quilt shapes that are difficult to freehand, they also act as a guide helping you recreate the shape consistently over the whole quilt.”
Are you having some difficulty visualizing what it looks like to quilt with a ruler? It will help to watch Angela's demonstration below. In this short 3.5 minute video, Angela will also explain the difference between low shank (⅛” thick) and high shank (¼” thick) Angela Walters Creative Grids rulers and show you how to tell which your machine needs.
Each of Angela’s Creative Grids machine quilting rulers has a name. In the demonstration video, Angela used the ruler named Slim. Angela recommended Slim for free motion beginners. Slim is a rectangle about as long as a person’s hand with rounded corners at the top. Like all of Angela’s Creative Grids quilting tools, Missouri Star carries both the low shank and high shank version of Slim. Once you have figured out whether your machine requires low shank or high shank rulers, be careful to select the correct item for your shopping cart. Click on the photo of the package where the measurement of the ruler’s thickness is clearly displayed.
Angela Walters free motion quilting rulers can help you create consistent patterns of stitches in your quilts without a programmable quilting machine. Start with one of the basic Angela Walters quilting rulers, consult one or two of Angela Walters quilting books, watch a few of the tutorial videos you can find on here on Angela’s website, and then give it a go! You can’t really learn a thing until you do it. Soon you too will be a confident free motion quilter!
