Sample Project: Kona Cotton - Navy, Red, and White by Robert Kaufman Fabrics

Project Size: 16” Circle

Project Supplies:

Additional Supplies Needed:

  • Glue Gun
  • E6000 Glue
  • Scissors

Step 1: Cut

From the navy fabric cut:

  • (2) 3¼” strips across the width of the fabric

    • Align the 5" mark on the template with the top of a 3¼” strip. Cut one wedge, rotate the template 180º, and cut a second wedge. Continue in this manner until you have cut a total of 22 navy Dresden blades.

From the red fabric cut:

  • (3) 3¼” strips across the width of the fabric.

    • Align the 5” mark on the template with the top of a 3¼” strip. Cut one wedge, rotate the template 180º, and cut a second wedge. Continue in this manner until you have cut a total of 48 red Dresden blades.

From the white fabric cut:

  • (3) 3¼” strips across the width of the fabric.

    • Align the 5” mark on the template with the top of a 3¼” strip. Cut 1 wedge, rotate the template 180º ,and cut a second wedge. Continue in this manner until you have cut a total of 48 white Dresden blades.

    • Set the remainder of the third strip aside.

Step 2: Sew

Fold 1 blade in half lengthwise, with right sides facing. Sew across the wide end of the folded blade.

Trim the corner, open the seam, and turn the point right side out. Press, centering the seam.

Make a total of 22 blue, 48 red, and 48 white wedges.

Step 3: Sew the Dresden plates

Gather 5 navy blades, 10 red blades, and 10 white blades.

Sew the navy blades together. Use a ¼ seam allowance and backstitch at both ends. Press the seams open and set the navy unit aside.

Sew the red and white blades together, alternating the colors. Use a ¼ seam allowance and backstitch at both ends. Press the seams open.

Sew the red/white and navy units to form a Dresden plate.

Press the inner edge of the Dresden plate in approximately ¼” with wrong sides touching to make a clean edge. Set the outer Dresden plate aside.

Repeat to make 3 additional Dresden plates using the following number of blades:

  • 6 navy, 12 red, and 12 white in the second plate.

  • 5 navy, 13 red, and 13 white in the third plate.
  • 6 navy, 13 red, and 13 white in the inner plate.

Step 4: Attach rings to 12” wreath

Start with the outer plate and work toward the inner plate.

Lay the plate onto the wreath form. Using both the E6000 and the hot glue gun, the outer plate is glued onto the metal wreath form. Let sit for a few seconds and allow the hot glue to harden. Once it is secure, follow the same procedure to attach the second and third plates, followed by the inner plate. Set aside for several hours to allow the E6000 glue to dry.

Step 5: Attach the stars

Gather the 4” x 8” fusible rectangle and draw 3 stars of your liking. Cut around the stars and, using the manufacturer's instructions, adhere to the remainder of the white strip that you set aside earlier.

Cut on the drawn lines to yield three stars from the fused white fabric. Using both the E6000 and your hot glue gun, glue the stars onto the blue wedges.

Once the stars are completely dried, you are ready to hang your Patriotic Wreath.

Picture it: A backyard filled with picnickers, a street full of parades, a sky filled with fireworks…and your front door, looking its Yankee Doodle dandiest with the prettiest wreath on the block!
